Let’s Get Poppin, Inc. Owner Reflects on Entrepreneurial Journey

Let’s Get Poppin celebrates 30 years in business this year, and owner Barbara Marsh shared a bit about her journey to owning a popcorn shop in Beverly/Morgan Park.

“Growing up in Chicago Housing was a great experience. I was raised in The Dearborn Homes. There was always someone selling things. My mom bought me an Easy Bake Oven. I loved baking and selling some of my items to my friends for three cents, or two for a nickel. As a child, I spent my summers in Sheepshead Bay, New York, visiting my grandmother along with other relatives. At that time, my grandmother baked for a nearby bakery. So fortunately for me, l was able to learn and help her. My dream was one day, when I grew up, to own and operate my own bakery. After working for a bakery, I realized this was not for me. I knew I wanted to have my own business, but at that time, just not sure what!

I was married and had my family at a very early age. My husband opened his own car wash and repair shop, a small grocery store, workout studio and an Arco Mini Market during our time together. This helped me to understand exactly what it was like, as well as what it took, to become a successful entrepreneur. Still, I was not sure of exactly what type of business I wanted to venture into. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to manage a popcorn shop. I loved working at this business and realized that I could incorporate my baking into it as well. One of the most important things I learned was to never go into a business you know nothing about. Be knowledgeable about the business.

My present husband encouraged me to follow my dream, and with his help, I was able to do so. I knew immediately the area in which I wanted to open a business. I lived in Beverly/Morgan Park and wanted to open a business in my own neighborhood. What a blessing to be able to open a business close to home! What kept me here are the customers and the support I received. I just can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

Congratulations to Barbara and Let’s Get Poppin on a successful 30 years and counting! Let’s Get Poppin is located at 11758 S. Western Ave. and can be found online at https://letsgetpoppin.com/.
